Hurley Posts an Interview with Evan Marks

admin | April 13, 2012

Here is what Hurley wrote…..

Evan Marks checks in to give us the scoop on this year’s festivities at The Ecology Center. Read on below and be sure to join us Saturday, April 14th for some Earth Day fun.

Hurley.com: Hey, Evan. Can you tell us a little bit about what’s going on at the center on Saturday?

Evan Marks: We’ve planned an exciting scavenger hunt that will be fun for the whole family. Beginning at the palm tree where a Barn Owl lives, friends and family can dissect the pellets to better understand the lives and habits of our winged friends. The rambling journey proceeds through all five of the Center’s Eco Labs to give you a chance to explore The Water Shed, plant seeds, feed the chickens, observe a working farm and much more. To top it off, organic food and drinks will be offered, including a mouth savoring menu of “Mex-eco” fromLa Sirena Grill and other goodies like refreshments from SambazonVitaCocoGuayaki andKéan Coffee. Also, Moonsville Collective will play their lively Bluegrass music that will be sure to get you up on your feet. Just in time for the gardening season, the Spring Plant and Seed Sale features organic heirloom vegetable and herb starts, available exclusively at The Ecology Center.

What’s up with the Hobie installation?
We have had the honor to partner and collaborate with local friends and advocates to make this Earth Day unforgettable. As usual, we’ve partnered up with Hurley to co-brand our We Are Earth Day tees. Mobile veggie gardens have been planted and distributed around town to our key partners, Hurley, Yoga Works, La Sirena Grill, Hobie Surf Shops and about a dozen restaurants. Our goal is to inspire everyone to grow their own!

How can people get involved?
To celebrate and support our collective effort, each participant will be asked to pledge an action like growing a veggie garden, conserving water, or riding a bicycle. From there, The Ecology Center will help make these pledges a reality by keeping in touch with you, offering solutions and encouragement throughout the year.

Thank you Hurley for your continued support and the shout out!!!

Children’s Water Festival Adventures.

admin | March 29, 2012

The Children’s Water Festival happens once a year, hosting thousands of children from all over southern California. In 2 days, The Water Shed hosted hundreds of children pledging more than 45,000 gallons of water savings.

The mission was simple: to learn where our water comes from, to make good water decisions daily, and to close the loop by pledging world water day everyday.

We’d like to say thank you to Hurley H2O, for their continued support in mobilizing The Water Shed, and to the children who engaged fully in doing their part to creating a clean water future, today, tomorrow and everyday.

World Water Day success!

admin | March 26, 2012

On World Water Day, we took The Water Shed on tour to Hurley headquarters, Huntington Beach High School and Hurley’s Laguna Beach store 225 Forest. Thank you to the hundreds that pledged to save and make everyday World Water Day. We tallied up the pledges, and in one day our community saved 4,500 gallons. Check it out!

A special thank you to Ben Edwards and the entire Hurley family for hosting us (and driving us!). Thanks to Sambazon, Kean Coffee, and Andrei’s Conscious Cuisine for a providing such a wonderful breakfast for all of us at Hurley!

Water Down the Drain

admin | March 21, 2012

Have you ever mapped out exactly where the water from your faucet really comes from?  Wondered how complicated the process is to get it to your home?  What about where it really goes when it literally, “goes down the drain”? Given thought as to how much water we need as a household, a city, a state, or just our country alone?

As for myself, water has always seemed so easy to come by.  It is at my disposal, whenever, and however much I need just comes right out of the tap or hose.  If  my water source allow me as much as I want, then there must be enough for everyone?  That is the general consensus. Right?

Unfortunately, water may seem to be easy and extremely accessible to us but for most of our world, access to clean drinkable water is hard to come by and most certainly, not  going down a drain.  It is important to remember while turning on our faucets, access does not mean excess.  We need to be good stewards of our resources; water especially.

A few things to consider:

Your washing machine has a pump that discharges graywater from the wash cycle to a standpipe that carries it to the municipal water system and away from your home.  That’s a shame because the thing about graywater is, you pay for it once, but you can use it twice. Why not keep graywater around and use it to give your lawn or garden a nice drink? With a few basic materials, you’ll be conserving cash and water in no time.

Just by harvesting the rain from your roof, you could possibly water everything you want when you want it in your yard. Harvesting rain reduces storm water runoff, provides high quality irrigation water from your garden and lowers your utility bills. But best of all…That water happens to be FREE!

So where do we start or even begin to learn?  Join us on March 24th at 1pm.  Our very own Director and founder, Evan Marks will be hosting a FREE, “Tools of the Trade” workshop on Household Water Retrofitting. Specifically Evan will be cover how to design simple water re-use strategies for the home and how to install both a rainwater catchment system and a greywater system.

Celebrate World Water Day! Thursday 3/22

admin | March 14, 2012

Southern California's water pathwayWater. We wash our hands in it. Shower our plants with it. Bathe ourselves and our clothes in it. We drink it all day long. But, do you know that the majority of the world does not have access to clean, drinkable water, let alone have it coming from every spigot in their home?

The lack of this basic need in the world has been such a concern for the UN that they designated March 22 as “International World Water Day” back in 1993. Since then, countries all over the world have focused energy and advocacy in March to raise awareness about freshwater and water stewardship. This year, The Ecology Center is bringing World Water Day to Orange County along with our partners at Hurley International, and we want you to join in.

“When somebody dies from lack of clean water, it’s so senseless because there are solutions… water is life” – Jon Rose, founder of Waves for Water.

We will start our day at Hurley HQ for a Water Summit with global clean water advocates Waves for Water, whose mission is to get clean water to every person who needs it. The Ecology Center will have The Water Shed on-site at Hurley, and we are thrilled to get to present and again share our interactive, educational exhibit with the sponsor who made it possible. Employees from Hurley, Waves for Water, and TEC will participate in a skill-share series to cross train each other in water advocacy and ecologically-sustainable practices such as container gardening.  We’re grateful to our friends at Andrei’s Conscious Cuisine of Irvine, Sambazon of San Clemente, and Kean Coffee of Newport Beach for their participation with us!

From there, we and The Water Shed head to Huntington Beach High School from noon-1pm to engage the student body there with what they can do for World Water Day.  Students will have the chance to see how much water their everyday actions consume, and then learn skills and simple choices that can make a huge impact on their water consumption. We’ll also be encouraging students to make a pledge to take their water usage seriously by choosing a specific action that they can do to make every day World Water Day.

After that, we are excited to bring World Water Day to YOU at the Nike/Hurley/Converse concept store 225 Forest in Laguna Beach from 4-7pm for The Water Shed demo’s and participation with Hurley’s H2O program.  Everyone is welcome to join us to learn about water stewardship and also to Print Your Own Hurley Tee in honor of World Water Day.  (A nominal fee will be charged for the tees – all sales will go toward good water efforts.)

So mark your calendars for next Thursday, March 22, from 6-8pm.  Join us in the evening for functional fun and entertaining education, and think about what YOU can do about your water consumption. Need a place to start? Visit our Water Resources page to learn about water safety and good stewardship.

Pledge online or in person to make every day World Water Day, and we’ll help you stick to your pledge with information, encouragement, and next steps!

Tools for Change

admin | November 30, 2011

Tools For Change is The Ecology Center’s new interactive exhibition that explores the myriad instruments—literal and figurative—that can be used to achieve positive ecological change and a culture of sustainability at the household and community level.

Healthy Home, Sustainable Community.

Tools For Change promotes healthy homes and a sustainable community by connecting people, products, ideas, and resources in five areas:

  1. Connect the Drops: How water conservation and water recycling at home helps protect our local watersheds and ensures an abundant future supply.
  2. Grow Your Own: Whether you grow your own food or shop from local farmers, there are many ways to feed your family in a way that’s healthy for them, good for the environment, and economical.
  3. Waste Free: Reduce waste, recycle, and repurpose to achieve a household that is truly modeled after nature.
  4. Good Energy: Consider simple retrofits to harness renewable energy and efficient technologies.
  5. Healthy Home: Ways to create a haven that’s safe and clean for the people who live in it, furnished by sustainably made goods and products, and maintained with practices that are ecologically sound.

Tools For Kids

The Kids’ Zone is a play area and learning space for young people that encourages creativity, curiosity and ecological awareness.  The space features a robust library of children’s books, videos, and other educational resources that celebrate sustainability and impart simple things kids can do to make a difference.

Pledge. Do. Share.

Tools For Change is a highly interactive experience that offers opportunities for anyone to make a difference, big or small.  The exhibition challenges visitors to:

  • pledge to make simple, positive changes in daily tasks and choices,
  • do what they promise by implementing or adopting their pledge, and
  • share their new skills and knowledge with friends and neighbors.

In addition to being interactive and educational, Tools For Change is a self-sustaining social enterprise venture.  The sales of featured household tools, products, and books will directly benefit The Center’s expansive portfolio of unique eco-educational programming.

Tools For Change is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays (starting December 3rd), from 11 AM – 5 PM, and by reservation for school groups Monday through Friday.

Less = More

admin | October 26, 2011

Last week we took The Water Shed to St. Margaret’s to visit all three second grade classes. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of kiddos to test out The Water Shed – and we couldn’t have been more excited to receive this lovely thank you note in the mail. Thank you Mrs. Abbate’s class! Look at everything they learned!

The Water Shed!

admin | October 18, 2011

The Ecology Center took The Water Shed on its maiden voyage this morning to a group of local 2nd graders. While half of the class learned about the effect daily choices have on their watershed, the other half learned about global water access and how 1 in 6 people around the world depend on less than 5 gallons of water a day. Moral of the story – everybody can make a difference!

What We’re up to This Weekend…

admin | September 29, 2011

The weekend is almost upon us and we’ve got some exciting things happening. First, the Laguna Beach County Water District has invited us down to their SmartScape Info/Expo to show off our newly finished mobile exhibition, The Watershed. Continuing the conversation about where our water comes from and how we use it, The Watershed is an interactive, educational experience for all ages. Stop by and see us; we’ll be there from 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Farm to Fork is back with Chef Ryan O’Melveny Wilson of SideDoor. Bring the kids and join us for our much loved youth culinary experience. Starting in our veggie garden and ending in the outdoor kitchen, children will learn how to prepare a simple meal with Chef Ryan. Parents may choose to stay throughout the duration of class or drop students off. Ages 6 through 12, please. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Call 949.443.4223 or visit us here to reserve your child’s space!

The Ecology Center Scores Gold with IDEA Award for Water Conservation Exhibit

admin | July 12, 2011

Known for its innovative approach to environmental education, The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano collaborated with the design firm Zago to create the Splash! How Good Water Works water conservation exhibit located at the Center through August 2011. The Splash! exhibit has now received a Gold Award in the category of Environments for the 2011 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), showing how good design can do more than look good; it can drive positive changes in the world.

The Splash! exhibit originated when Evan Marks, the director of The Ecology Center, saw a provocative exhibit on climate change at the United Nations that ZAGO had created in New York. The exhibit featured bean bags representing the greenhouse gas emissions of different countries, challenging visitors to get involved in solutions for climate change.

The Zago climate change exhibit at the UN represented for Marks the power of good design to drive positive social change. “It was amazing,” said Marks. After talking, Marks and the Zago team developed a plan to work together informing people about solutions for another important problem. “A year and a half later, we said we should do something on water.”

To make the water exhibit a reality they teamed up with surf brand Hurley and their recently launched H20 initiative as the beginning of a partnership to inspire water literacy and access.

Throughout 2009 Zago and The Ecology Center collaborated closely on the development of the Splash! exhibit, finding captivating ways to show visitors the large impact of everyday choices on water conservation. There were many challenges along the way, with different priorities challenging all involved at the center and their community, but in the end the resulting exhibit encourages visitors to rethink how they live.

Open on weekends for visits, the Splash! exhibit features a self guided walk through the solutions we can use to slash our water use. As you walk through the exhibit you find that the typical Southern Californian uses 1800 gallons of water a day, often in surprising ways. Electronics that we buy require enormous quantities of water to produce, and eating less meat can save 2000 gallons of water a week as well as saving money and boosting our health.

“We rarely have the opportunity to work on projects that have both a local focus and a global reach,” said Manuel Toscano, principal at Zago. “With the exhibition “Splash! how good water works” under the creative and content partnership we forged with Evan Marks and his organization The Ecology Center, we successfully created an exhibition that covers the challenges and opportunities associated with water quality and conservation in the Orange County, while still putting these challenges in a global context. We are very proud and exited to have been recognized by the IDSA with a gold award for one of our favorite and most enjoyable projects of 2010.”

The unique design of the Splash exhibit that earned it the Gold IDEA award helps its message to connect with people. Although water is a pressing challenge around the globe, the exhibit and everything else at The Ecology Center are optimistic. Rather than lecturing, the exhibit draws us in, welcoming us as guests into the 1878 farmhouse that has become a center of 21st century environmental solutions.

The IDEA award ceremony for the Splash! exhibit will take place at the 2011 IDSA International Conference September 14 to 17 in New Orleans.
