Greenhouse Coordinator 

Full-Time, Hourly 

The Greenhouse Coordinator (GHC) is responsible for coordinating, maintaining and fulfilling all of the greenhouse and propagation needs for The Ecology Center’s Farm production and Nursery. The GHC is the primary caretaker of the seeds and plants from the time of seeding through the transplant stage or for sale to the nursery. In addition, the GHC will be responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, sanitary and healthy work environment for both the plants and people. 

General Responsibilities:

  • Follow the Crop Production Plan and execute weekly sowings according to the production plan. 
  • Coordinate day-to-day production of crops in the greenhouse including seeding, irrigating, thinning, fertilizing, and pest management.
  • Organize and supervise the greenhouse work of Apprentices and Volunteers.
  • Create and implement the weekly greenhouse work plan and update daily task tickets for chore management. 
  • Keep thorough, accurate weekly seeding, planting and other cultural records
  • Lead and execute our seed saving program.
  • Identify and propagate perennials for sale in the nursery.
  • Appropriately label, organize and distribute transplants and nursery sale crops to each department.
  • Monitor daily seedling moisture, temperature and humidity levels.
  • Monitor seed stock and maintain appropriate levels of inventory.
  • Execute the IPM strategy for the Greenhouse production.
  • Execute on the daily/weekly Greenhouse SOPs.
  • Maintain in good supply all Greenhouse supplies such as propagation trays, potting soil, amendments, labeling supplies, etc.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and sanitary Greenhouse environment. 

Essential Qualifications 

  • Ability to work independently in an outdoor setting during various weather conditions.
  • Organized and able to follow a crop plan, prioritize critical tasks and work in a focused, timely, and efficient manner

  • Knowledge of basic organic nursery practices and crop production
  • 1-2 years of experience with Greenhouse propagation work and a familiarity with: 
    1. Sexual and asexual propogation techniques
    2. Soil Media and propagation mixes
    3. Basic Organic horticultural knowledge
    4. Common pests and diseases that affect crop production
    5. Common greenhouse/nursery equipment including: Vacuum seeders, irrigation equipment, prop trays etc 
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and perform physical tasks associated with farm work.
  • Be in possession of a current California’s Driver’s License and auto insurance, as well as reliable transportation to the farm.
  • Must be willing to maintain a flexible work schedule, working weekends and evenings when needed.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with using spreadsheets.

Market Garden Coordinator – San Juan Capistrano

Full-Time, Hourly 

The Market Garden Coordinator oversees the day-to-day production, irrigation, cultivation and harvests of the Market Garden at The Ecology Center. In addition, the Market Garden Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Replication Manager with the training, education and labor coordination of apprentices and volunteers that participate and engage in Market Garden activities. The Market Garden coordinator works closely with the Replication Manager and the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure the production of the crops happens in a timely and efficient manner. In addition, the Market Garden Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and beautiful garden for the staff and public to enjoy and engage with on a daily basis. 

The primary functions of the SJC Market Garden are: 

  1. Grow nutrient dense produce for sale and distribution to The Ecology Center Food Hub
  2. Educate and train the next generation of farmers 
  3. Demonstrate profitable, small scale regenerative farming practices that utilize efficient methods that prioritize the health of the farmers, the soil, and surrounding ecosystem 
  4. Cultivate community through volunteering, education and programming
  5. Experiment and develop culturally appropriate and site specific fruit, vegetable and floral varieties that thrive in our bioregion 

Position Responsibilities 

  • Follow and implement the Garden Crop Plan.
  • Coordinate day-to-day production of crops in the market garden, including planting, seeding, irrigating, cultivating, and harvesting. 
  • Assist Garden Manager with creating and implementing the weekly garden work plan and update daily task tickets for chore management. 
  • Organize and supervise the work of apprentices and volunteers. (Work with Volunteer Coordinator to schedule, confirm, prioritize, and work-plan weekly volunteer duties)
  • Implement organic IPM practices to keep a balance of ecology in the garden. (Compost Tea Spraying, Organic Fertilizing, Pesticide applications, etc.)
  • Prepare weekly harvest availability sheets for the Ecology Centers Distribution Manager
  • Maintain all inventory of all supplies needed for production, harvest and post harvest handling.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and efficient workspace.
  • Maintain production records in order to meet our organic certification needs and constant improvement goals, including seeding, planting, harvesting, as well as fertilizer and pest control applications. (IPM)
  • Track harvest production for Farm Stand, Farm Share, off-site distribution.
  • Assist Replication manager with budget tracking: labor and supplies must be in balance with garden production. 
  • Provide general support for TEC’s programs and events as needed. 
  • Oversee quality control and food safety.

The Market Garden Coordinator position is located at the Encinitas Union School District (EUSD) FarmLab site where The Ecology Center (TEC) works in partnership with EUSD. The Market Garden Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the daily tasks associated with the planting, care, and maintenance of the 2 acres of vegetable production,1 acre of orchard, and various native, herbal and flower gardens throughout the property.

Customer Relations Coordinator

Full-time, Non-Exempt

The Customer Relations Coordinator will serve as a direct support to the marketing manager and Farm Share team. The coordinator will be responsible for helping members of The Ecology Center community with a variety of programs and events related to The Ecology Center, serving as the main point of contact for phone calls, emails and social media messaging. In addition to communicating directly with our community the coordinator will be responsible for helping problem solve, resolve issues for our Farm Share members, Family Members, and making sure all requests received via email or phone are passed to the appropriate party in a timely manner. In addition to these duties the coordinator will assist the marketing manager in creation of emails, updating the website, editing photos and additional marketing related tasks as needed.

Customer Relations Coordinator must carry out the following general tasks below:

Farm Share

  • Responsible for solving problems regarding Farm Share registration, missing orders, subscription pick up changes, refunds and cancelations, general information, billing questions, moving subscriptions to new dates/locations, and escalating technical issues to the development team
  • Proactively recording and communicating Farm Share member concerns and feedback with the Farm Share and marketing team

General Communications

  • Responsible for answering phone and responding to voicemails within a timely manner and with grace
  • Manage membership program – database, fulfillment, communication, renewal
  • Responsible for checking, organizing and responding to email communications relaying pertinent information across the organization as needed
  • Assist Marketing Department with communications received via Instagram and Facebook – relaying information to the correct parties as necessary
  • Must be empathetic, compassionate and have an even temper and communicate genuine concern and determination to make things right for our customers and our staff – hospitality is core to our success and we love serving our community.

The Ecology Center Farm Stand & Farm Share Member

Part-time, Non-Exempt

As The Ecology Center Farm Stand & Farm Share Member, you will be one of the main representatives for our community. You will be a cashier in our farm stand and share in the celebration of high-quality, unique produce and food. You will also be trained up to work in our Farm Share Harvest Box operation which includes onsite and offsite distribution. This role offers the opportunity to connect deeply with The Ecology Center employees and friends, a growing and engaging community.

The Ecology Center Farm Stand & Farm Share Member must carry out the following general tasks below.

Customer Experience

  • Stay up to date with member services on customer concerns and feedback to ensure customer success
  • Institute and maintain verbal customer survey practices to ensure any customer concerns are met proactively
  • Build relationships with each customer, learn their name, their kids’ names, their dogs’ name
  • Stay up to date with The Ecology Center events, products, and offerings to share and speak to
  • Use the Harvest Guide to learn about the ingredients of each box as well as potential upsell opportunities and pairings with our add on products – serving as a culinary guide for our community
  • Maintain a positive, proactive, and knowledgeable outlook as well as a professional appearance

Farm Stand Cashier

  • Accurately enter each item into the POS system during checkout
  • All functions relating to working the check-out line
  • Keep the line to a minimum by checking people out quickly and effectively without sacrificing customer service

Farm Share Harvest Box Distribution

  • Organize, check, and fulfill Harvest Box and pantry orders to the correct customers promptly

Farm Share Harvest Box Distribution Offsite 

  • Must be able to load and unload the distribution vehicle – this is a very physical task, lifting 50lb boxes, loading multiple tables, easy up tents, etc.
  • Must be comfortable driving a 14ft step van or Mercedes sprinter van
  • Must have valid California driver’s license and auto insurance
  • Upon return from offsite location unload and organize inventory back into the correct location of our warehouse/cooler
  • Weekend availability is required

We are seeking passionate applicants with produce handling experience. Our produce team is passionate about the abundance of our certified organic farm and regenerative organic agriculture.
