How To Make Recycled Newspaper Pots

One of the easiest ways to get your garden growing is with recycled materials. Put your newspaper, junk mail or magazine clippings to work and build a paper pot. This easy project is perfect for an herb garden, starting seedlings or trying out your green thumb before committing to your very own garden.

Recycled Newspaper Pots

  • Strips of newspaper cut to about 4″ x 11″
  • Organic potting soil
  • Small seedlings or seeds
  • A 1/2 pint jar and lid (other recycled bottles or cans work great too)
  • A spoon
  1. Place your jar on the newspaper about halfway down
  2. Roll the newspaper around the jar tightly. There should be a couple inches of newspaper sticking out at the bottom
  3. Hold the seam of the newspaper around the jar
  4. Push the open end of newspaper down around the bottom of the jar
  5. Press the jar bottom into the lid to “lock” the newspaper pot bottom
  6. Pull it gently off
  7. Fill with soil
  8. Plant a seed or seedling
