Welcome Our Water Ambassadors

The Water Effect inspires ripples of change through simple solutions, open-source toolkits, and incentive-based campaigns, challenges, and celebrations.

Natalie Tran
I’m a 17 year-old senior at Dana Hills High School. I participate in my school’s volunteering programs, such as NHS, CSF, and the DHHS Ecology Club, and am currently studying AP Environmental Science. I have a strong interest in community service and a foundation in the sciences. I see The Water Effect as a wonderful hands-on experience to help my community work toward environmental sustainability.

What does community mean to you?

Community is the relationship among and between a group of people and the environment they live in. To me, fostering good community relations, whether treating our natural resources better or raising environmental awareness among other people, is essential to the overall well-being of a community. Understanding the effects of our relationship with the environment is also key to the success of a community.

What does sustainability mean to you?

Sustainability is the maintenance of a natural resource and avoidance of exhausting that resource. Now more than ever, it is important to create methods of conserving our natural resources and design sustainable technology that reduces our harm on the environment. It is just as vital to properly implement these practices in as many areas of our community as possible.

When do you feel most hopeful about our Planet Earth?

I have faith in the hardworking environmentalists of today and tomorrow, and especially in their ability to inspire others to follow in their paths. Leading by example is a powerful, influential tool, and if appropriately utilized, we can make major steps towards saving the planet and hopefully achieve that.
What’s one simple solution to conserve water that does a whole lotta good?
One way to conserve water is to switch from plastic, single-use water bottles to reusable ones. It takes several gallons of water to create a single plastic bottle, and by only using a single, indispensable bottle, a single person, not to mention a whole community, can save thousands of gallons of water per year.
Favorite Tool for Change?
The Cluck Yeah! Chicken Shirt, which I own. I love the the bright colors of the shirt and how it also supports backyard chickens, which are very helpful (and cute) animals. Backyard chickens provide eggs (bypassing the production and transportation costs and effects of factory farms), compost leftover food and waste, supply fertilizer for soil, and provide their own meat for food.
Abbey lee

I’m a senior at Halstrom Academy. I’ve always been passionate about our environment. Earth gives us water and other resources, yet we do not have much respect for it. I joined The Water Effect as an ambassador to help others realize how fortunate we are to have resources such as clean, fresh water.

What does community mean to you?
Community is a group of people who have similar interests and values. It’s also like a puzzle. We are complete as a whole. Everyone brings their unique set of skills and parts to form a community.

What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability to me means caring about our future. It is using resources wisely to support ecological balance in the long term.

When do you feel most hopeful about our Planet Earth?
I feel most hopeful when I see environmentalists and professors continuously research about our environment and update us with new information. I also feel hopeful when people actually care about sustainability, and are willing to be educated about global issues.
What’s one simple solution to conserve water that does a whole lotta good?

One of the best solution is to only buy what’s necessary or to plan out meals before grocery shopping. According to Natural Resources Defense Council, the average American wastes about 40% of their food. Surprising, right? Crops and animals need tons of water to grow, so if we are wasting food, we are also wasting water.

Favorite Tool for Change?
The Ecology Center Tote Bag is my favorite tool for change item because you can use them in place of plastic bags.

CADE MILLS

I attend San Clemente High School. As of recent, I have survived my seventeenth revolution around the sun and completed half of my junior year in high school. Choosing to take AP Environmental Science at school this year was easily one of the greatest decisions I have ever made, seeing that it has completely changed the way I look at the natural world for good. I am now inspired to promote sustainability and drive social progress in the form of environmental awareness in any way I can, and this is the passion that has brought me to interning for The Water Effect. This year, my peers and I started an environmental club at our school, entitled Team Zissou, with the aim of changing the school culture and climate toward environmentalism. I look forward to being the catalyst of change for good in the approaching months as an intern for The Water Effect and a leader of Team Zissou.

What does community mean to you?

Community means solidarity and social progress. When we humans can come together in a community, we gain a sense of solidarity and power in our togetherness. The cooperation found in communities drives change for good and promotes social progress.

What does sustainability mean to you?

To me sustainability means respecting our future. Without practicing proper sustainability, we threaten the future of life on Earth through natural capital degradation. As human beings and guests on Planet Earth, we should feel required to try and promote sustainable practices in all aspects of our lives.

When do you feel most hopeful about Planet Earth?

I feel most hopeful about our planet when my peers and I make efforts to be the catalyst of environmental change. The activism of my generation inspires me everyday to try and live sustainably, and gives me hope that we can actually make a difference in modern society.

What’s one simple solution that does a whole lotta good?

One simple solution to conserving water that does a whole lotta good is supporting organic agriculture and buying locally grown fruits and vegetables. This reduces the amount of water and fossil fuels used to get food to your plate exponentially.

Favorite Tool for Change?

Easily the reusable water bottle. It is such a simple and stylish solution to both conserving water and reducing plastic waste, and there truly is no excuse to not be using one nowadays.

ISABELLA CIRAULO

I have lived in Dana Point for the past 16 years.  I enjoy getting outside and playing tennis and beach volleyball. I go to Dana Hills High School.  This year, I decided to take an AP Environmental Science class and was surprised at how much it interested me.  I wanted to branch out by taking a science course I did not know much about and I am blown away by all the new things I am learning. I now have new knowledge of the amazing ways we are connected to our environment and the world.

What does community mean to you?

A community is a united and connected group of people.

What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability is being able to meet our needs as people without damaging our environment.
When do you feel most hopeful about our Planet Earth?
I feel most hopeful about our Planet Earth when I am with other people who also understand the importance of protecting and conserving our environment.
What’s one simple solution that does a whole lotta good?
Most people do not know how many easy ways they can save water.  For example, choosing to water plants early in the morning or late in the day decreases the amount of water that would evaporate in the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest.  Preventing the loss of water through evaporation lets the plants receive more water, wasting less.

Favorite Tool for Change?

It is hard to choose my favorite “Tool for Change” from the TEC store since they are all so creative and smart.  One of my favorite ideas is their Community Supported Pantry.  I love this because it is a cool easy way for people to support locally made foods.
